Definition
ISO 20022 is a global standard for financial messages. In payments, it provides structured message definitions that can carry richer information about parties, purpose, references, identifiers, remittance data, and transaction state.
How Vanta Crest sees it
The important distinction is between message structure and operating control. ISO 20022 can help a payment record carry more meaning, but the institution still has to decide which fields matter, how they are validated, where they are retained, and how downstream systems use them.
A standards migration can succeed technically while failing operationally. If richer data is flattened into weak internal references, reconciliation and review remain dependent on manual interpretation.
How to build with it
Begin from the payment flows that carry the most consequence: collections, disbursements, partner-originated payments, high-volume reconciliation, and regulated reporting.
Treat field mapping as an operating design question. Purpose, obligation reference, counterparty context, identifiers, status, exception history, and retention rules should be decided before the institution relies on the new record.
Why It Matters
Payment records often fail because the payment moved faster than its meaning. A richer message structure can reduce that gap by carrying purpose, references, parties, identifiers, and remittance context in a form systems can read.
The risk is assuming that a better message standard automatically creates a better institution. It does not. Operators still need validation rules, reconciliation logic, exception ownership, reporting discipline, and evidence that survives across the systems touched by the payment.
What Good Looks Like
- Structured payment fields remain useful after they leave the first system that received them.
- Purpose, references, counterparties, identifiers, and status are mapped to real reconciliation and review needs.
- Exceptions do not erase context; failed, reversed, disputed, or unresolved payments retain the information needed to act.
Treating ISO 20022 as message conversion alone. The institution can pass a technical migration and still leave finance, risk, operations, and management without a record strong enough to rely on.
